Digital sales accounted for about 90% of the UK video game market in 2022

According to the BBC, nine out of ten games sold in the UK in 2022 were digital copies.

According to data provided by the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), only 10.5% of sales came from physical copies of video games. Cartridges and discs for today's consoles have seen a significant decline in sales during the coronavirus pandemic, and this trend does not appear to be slowing down.

In total, the UK gaming industry earned about £4.7 billion in 2022 - this figure is higher than the profit that the film distribution, music industry or television brought in the same period of time.

ERA chief executive Kim Bailey also noted that the gaming market has grown by only 2.3% over the past 12 months, less than the music or video segment. However, this volume is still very large, and games demonstrate a significant superiority over other media in the entertainment sector. They formed 42.1% of all the profits attracted by the entertainment industry last year.
